These boards and platters are made from natural materials, which will build patina with age and use. Wash with mild soap and warm water (no dishwasher, no soaking), and periodically treat with Howard Butcher Block Conditioner (or other food-safe butcher block conditioner). If after use you notice scratches from utensils, you may lightly sand and re-apply conditioner.
We use two types of finishes:
1) If the item is designed to be cut upon or cleaned with water and soap, i.e., a Bar Board, Cheese Slicer, or Party Plate, we use Howard's Butcher Block Conditioner, an all-natural mix of mineral oil, bee's wax, and vitamin e oil. In our experience, this is the best, longest lasting, and most protective finish of its kind.
2) All other items , i.e., lamps, plant stands, etc., are finished with a hard-film material such as polyurethane, either oil or water based, depending on the wood species. This finish provides a hard, durable, and good looking finish that doesn't make the item appear that it was dipped in plastic.
